Exploring 2009

Our Family enjoys hiking and climbing.

Here are a few shots of places we have climbed and hiked.

Sand Rock - north of Gadsden, Alabama

Alabama Palisades north of Birmingham, Alabama

Mississippi Palisades north of the Quad Cities, Illinois/Iowa

View from the top at the anchors of Sentinel Tower with a great view of the Mississippi River.

Lone Pine, California is a place where movies were and are made.  John Wayne stood in front of the camera for the last time there. The breathtaking views of the Sierras cannot be beat as Mt. Whitney hovers over the not-to-be-missed formations known as the Alabama Hills, a sport climbers dream place.

Paul on Shark Fin.

Boulder Canyon Colorado

Paul climbing Castle Rock, just west of Boulder.

Smith Rock State Park in central Oregon is a breathtaking place.  The steep trails will definitely take your breath away!  This is the home of sport climbing.

If it is not our favorite place, it is a close second:  Moah, Utah.  We took the drive of our life through Canyonlands National Park on the 4wd road along the Colorado River.  It might be better than a donkey ride at the Grand Canyon.

The 4WD road is not for the faint at heart!  But if you are adventurous it is absolutely required!

Gilman Tunnels, north of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  One of the most picturesque places in the U.S.   The climbing is great too!

Great Climbing is found all around New Hampshire.

Echo Crag has great trad routes(above) across from Cannon Mountain in the Franconia Notch.  Ski slopes(below) on Cannon Mountain from atop Artist Bluff climbs.

Climbing on Mona Lisa at Artist Bluff.

Down in the South we had a good time in Arkansas.  We hiked to the monument at the original site of the survey for the Louisiana Purchase at the Louisiana Purchase State Park, toured the aluminum town of Bauxite, dug up diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park and saw the blacksmith shop where the Bowie knife was forged at the Washington State Historic Park.
